Re: "Close to Storks" project

Saturday 16th June 2012

Our three young storks are growing at an amazing rate
.  They are beginning to stand up in the nest and maintain reasonably good balance, and we expect that very soon they will start learning to walk on fully stretched legs.  At the moment, there is a lot of shuffling and wing-flexing going on: the youngsters are stretching and practicing their flight muscles. The parents have been very busy providing enough food to satisfy their growing children's appetites. Fortunately, there have been alternating stretches of sunshine and rain in the Przygodzice region, encouraging a good supply of insects, earthworms, grass snakes and other small creatures for the stork's menu, so there is a good supply of protein-rich diet essential for the youngsters' growth and development.

In the next few days, the young storks will be given individual names. Following a competition in which our members have been sending in their proposals, ten names will soon be shortlisted out of the several dozen suggested, and then there will be a general voting open to forum members, in which three names will be chosen out of the selected ten.  So watch this space: Before long, our young storks will not be nameless any more!

Re: "Close to Storks" project

Saturday 23rd June

All our registered forum members are invited to VOTE IN A POLL TO CHOOSE NAMES for our young stork chicks!

There is a list of ten names chosen from among members' proposals.  If you go to our forum page http://www.bocianyzprzygodzic.pun.pl/vi … hp?id=631,
you will see the names. They are:

1.Busiołek
2.Szperek
3.Ordynat
4.Pola
5.Dzióbek
6.Fryderyk
7.Filip
8.Klara
9.Sławek
10.Pisanka

Provided you are registered as a forum member, and logged in, you can then vote in the poll, by going to the link http://www.bocianyzprzygodzic.pun.pl/vi … hp?id=631, (go to: SONDY), and proposing (ticking off) THREE names of your choice.  Of the whole list, numbers 4, 8, and 10 are female.

We have a couple of days now to register our votes.  The three most popular names selected in the poll will then be given to the young stork chicks during the ringing operation, the date of which will be announced next week.

Just to let you know, the first name on the proposed list, "Busiołek", is a little-known traditional folk name given to storks in the Polish countryside in the past (the standard official name being "bocian" or "bociek"), and we believe it is worth resurrecting the tradition - but of course you can make your own choice according to whatever names you like!

Happy voting!

And keep watching our family of parents and fast-growing youngsters on www.bociany.ec.pl.

Re: "Close to Storks" project

The results of the stork-naming poll were announced yesterday. By popular vote, our youngsters were given the names of "Pola" (female), "Busiołek" and "Dzióbek".

Also yesterday, the young storks were ringed and measured, in a very smoothly executed operation, thanks to our expert  ringing team led by Pawel Dolata, with the splendid help of the local Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Przygodzice Parish Council. All three young storks were found to be in good health.

So our youngsters are no longer nameless!! It is still not precisely certain which of them are male and which are female, but they will carry the given names nonetheless.  In the case of Pola, the female-named stork (who AT THE MOMENT seems to be the smallest and weakest), should she ever be found to be a male, we will re-name her "Polak".

Best wishes, and do continue to watch out stork family a www.bociany.ec.pl

Re: "Close to Storks" project

Sunday 1st July

Our young newly-named storks, Pola, Busiolek and Dziobek, seem to have recovered fully after the surprise of the ringing operation yesterday, and now behave as if nothing had happened out of the ordinary. The stork parents also have taken it in their stride. Everyday routines on the nest are being resumed as usual.
But these routines will soon be changing: the youngsters' flight feathers and muscles are getting bigger and stronger, and they are just getting ready to practice the "high jump (with wings flapping)" exercises on the nest, in preparation for the next stage: learning their flying skills! There are exciting weeks ahead to look forward to!

We hope you will continue to enjoy watching this new chapter in the life of the Przygodzice stork family on www.bociany.ec.pl

Re: "Close to Storks" project

19 July 2012

Since our last post here, the youngsters have been very busy practising their new skills of jumps and high leaps on the nest, and - eventually  - their first flights away from their "high-rise home"

For those who may have missed these developments, here are a few short films illustrating their progress from the first clumsy (and very funny!) training exercises to the latest acquired flight skills - not quite of Olympic rating yet, but quite impressive nonetheless!

9th July (film courtesy of Renia) - the youngster only just learning to jump, like an ungainly toddler:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JL-zD_ul … e=youtu.be

13 July (courtesy of iganka) - the young stork has discovered trampolining!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8_jozwBSEU

17 July (courtesy of Renia) - FIRST RECORDED FLIGHT THIS YEAR:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyRwu1ne … e=youtu.be

19 July (courtesy of iganka) - effortless take-off from nest; on young stork's return, siblings greet him/her with typical neck flexing positions and "clattering":

We are very proud of our young storks, and also of their parents, who are feeding them faithfully and tirelessly, and still protecting them in the nest.

Happy continued viewing!

We also remind our forum visitors that the Seventh Annual Stork Lovers' Meeting ("Close to Storks") in Przygodzice is taking place next coming weekend, 27-29 July 2012- see my post of 7 June above (http://www.bocianyzprzygodzic.pun.pl/vi … 772#p38772). For those who can read Polish, there are more details on www.pwg.otop.org.pl . The programme is full of interesting talks, panel discussions, film screenings, live visits under the nest, and guided nature walks around Przygodzice and the surrounding River Barycz Valley.  It is not too late to decide NOW - all visitors will be made most welcome! If you have any questions about getting there and/or accommodation, please feel free to ask here.

We hope to see you in Przygodzice - the storks are waiting!

In the meantime, enjoy watching new developments in the nest,

Anka

Re: "Close to Storks" project

21 July

All three young storks can now fly!

This morning they all took off for short flights in the neighborhood of the nest, but soon came back for breakfast, which was still supplied by a tireless parent. Przygoda and Dziedzic deserve high praise for their hard work in raising their young.

Re: "Close to Storks" project

Thursday 18 April, (19:30 hours) -  A brief update on the events in the nest:

Some time during the night of 15 April Przygoda laid her first egg of the season. It was noticed by one of our viewers in the early daylight hours of next morning, Tuesday 16 April, positioned uncharacteristically at the edge of the nest. Soon afterward, one of the storks swept it outside the nest.
The next day, 17 April, the same situation was repeated: an egg was laid, then placed at the nest's edge, and very soon the stork(s) got rid of it again.

This has caused alarm among many of our viewers, as well as speculations about the possible causes of this worrying behaviour, especially as some members have observed that  the male stork does not seem to be particularly skilled or interested in courtship and/or copulation, and is spending very little time in the nest.

However, our experts are of the opinion that it is too early to worry and suspect that something is seriously wrong. It is still early in the breeding season; the phenomenon of rejecting an egg this early in the season is relatively common, especially if the egg has not been fertilised; the male (who may be young and inexperienced) may yet assert his rights to the nest and to the female; or another, more mature bird may yet join Przygoda in the nest for breeding.

It is worth remembering that the weather this spring has been very unusual. To date, single storks still awaiting the arrival of mates have been observed in quite a number of other Polish and foreign nests that are monitored by cameras or observed from the ground.

The consensus is that it is best to allow nature to follow its course, assume that the birds know what they are doing, and observe closely all further developments in the Przygodzice nest.

We will be grateful for any observations reported by you, our viewers, in the forum, also in this English-language section.  The more we are able to observe the behaviour of our storks, even in seemingly insignificant detail, the better we'll be able to understand what is happening in the nest.

Greetings from Przygodzice and the whole team!!

Re: "Close to Storks" project

Saturday morning, 20 April

The same scenario was repeated overnight and this morning: Przygoda laid her third egg some time in the night, but by about 6 am pushed it out of the nest.
The egg was most probably not fertilised, or there were poor chances for getting it to hatch successfully in view of the non-typical behaviour of the male who only very sporadically visits the nest and shows little interest in courtship, copulation or help with building up the nest.

However, all is not necessarily lost: it is not yet too late in the season to produce a successful brood. More storks have been arriving all the time in the neighbourhood of Przygodzice, so there may well be a chance that a newly-arrived mature male capable of good parenthood will still join Przygoda in her nest.

Let us keep fingers crossed and hope for the best.

We again invite our foreign viewers to register with the forum (if not yet members) and join us in reporting their observations of the nest in this thread. French and Russian languages also welcome!

Greetings on behalf of the whole team! 😊

Re: "Close to Storks" project

Monday 22 April

Sadly, the fourth egg, laid by Przygoda yesterday evening, has also been thrown out of the nest. The most likely reason is that this year she does not have a reliable male partner with whom to start a family and have a good chance to rear a healthy brood of young storks fit enough for the winter migration. Consequently, natural instinct has most likely told her to get rid of the egg - so as not to use up valuable energy on trying to pursue a non-viable course of action.

We are all, of course, greatly saddened by this turn of events. But we must accept that nature in her wisdom knows best and acts for the optimal interest of the species.

There is still a small chance that the arrival of a suitable, mature and dependable male breeding stork might change this situation before it is too late. So we continue monitoring the nest in the interest of the project. There is always something to learn from all developments.

In the meantime, other strands of the project are continuing. Please follow the different threads in the English-language section, or - if you understand Polish - refer to the general Index for this forum.

Let's all keep fingers crossed for our nest!

Re: "Close to Storks" project

Hello!

This year the first stork (the unringed female) occupied the nest in Przygodzice www.bociany.ec.pl since 7th April.

Today (20th April) at 4.10 pm the pair (both birds unringed) was seen on this nest for the first time (by Renia Paździor)
– see photos on http://bocianyzprzygodzic.pun.pl/viewto … 731#p43731 and short movie by Renia http://youtu.be/sAhLRypCyKE

I hope they will stay and will have a nestlings herw. You can observe it on www.bociany.ec.pl

Hello
Unfortunately, the second stork was only one day. At present, staying one stork nest, probably female. It promises to be again without breeding season, too bad.

Hello!

At 9.16 today just passed a week from joining the female, called Przygoda (“Adventure” in Polish), to the male Dziedzic (“Landlord” in Polish), in the nest in Przygodzice, which we can observed at www.bociany.ec.pl :-)
